Hosting

Websites need webspace to exist in. The above price guide does not include cost of hosting (providing webspace for a website), however we have negotiated a special hosting deal for our clients with site-street. If you want to book a domain name (www.yourchoiceifavailable.co.uk) with 10mb webspace, 200mb data transfer per month (data transfer relates to the number of visitors to your website and the amount of information viewed/downloaded) at a low fixed price of £90 for 2 years then click here for details and sign up information. This option is based on a Shared Server.

For fast and professional website hosting we have found www.site-street.com to be very efficient and cost effective, and for large mission critical websites that require a lot of capacity www.unitedhosting.co.uk are worth considering.

'Jargon' used by hosting companies :-

Bandwidth/Data Transfer - in the context of web hosting companies it refers to how much traffic a web hosting company will allow each month.

Disc space - the space where the content of your website is stored including files, databases, email etc

Dedicated Server - This can also be a 'managed' dedicated server, where the hosting company owns and manages the machine, leasing full control to the client. Management of the server can include monitoring to ensure the server continues to work effectively, backup services, installation of security patches and various levels of technical support. Different companies offer different levels of service.

Shared Server - The most popular form of hosting for websites where the amount of bandwidth is not going to be excessive. The hosting company stores your website on a shared server along with others.

Acceptable use policy - This is where a hosting company provides details and any restrictions on the service they are providing. These clauses should be read carefully to avoid nasty surprises later.

There are other terms that are used in the hosting context but those listed here are some of the key ones.
